Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I’d like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. I heard they have some pretty strict laws about transporting firearms, and avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time. I’ve been looking into a few alternate routes, but nothing feels right yet. Anyone dealt with this before? What did you end up doing? I’m open to suggestions.

My son and I are planning a trip to Texas this winter to shoot hogs. We will be avoiding Colorado like the plague that it is. The extra travel time is worth not having to worry about the stupidity of local laws.

Sad that Colorado has become a state with firearms issues. Back in the day, it was part of the wild west, and only Boulder was an annex of California.

I would probably bring low capacity mags for the semi auto or a revolver. When driving through NY, keep the gun in the trunk, or the furthest compartment away from the driver. Store the ammo separate from the gun and lock the gun case.

Don't have any gun related stickers on your vehicle. There have been people pulled over when the stickers alerted authorities.

Have a safe trip!

I agree completely. I once drove that route and followed federal safe passage rules: unloaded, locked in the trunk, ammo stored separately. Other times I shipped the firearm to an FFL
