I spent last summer fishing a few mountain streams in Utah, trying to master both nymphing and dry fly fishing. Some days the trout only wanted what was drifting deep, and other times they’d crush a dry right at the surface. I still can’t decide which I like more cause both have their rhythm. When the hatch slows down, do you stick with dries or drop a nymph?

I put a dry fly on with a dropper line with a nymph. Which one gets hit the most is what I'll use afterwards or if it's even I'll just keep using the same setup.
Just getting out is more of the challenge anymore sadly.

I totally get it, that surface strike is epic but those deep hookups feel like real work. When the hatch slows down, I'm usually dropping a nymph. Most of a trout's food is down deep anyway. You can always use a dry dropper' setup, it is the best of both worlds, man
