I spend most of the pheasant season hunting the WMAs around Brigham City. I have an opportunity to take in a 2 yr old golden retriever that has zero field experience and I'm considering training him up myself.

I'm looking for a dog that can handle both dry upland work and the occasional water retrieve. My main questions are for those who've hunted with goldens in our kind of terrain. How do you manage them to prevent overheating on warmer days in Nov?

Never had a golden retriever. Most gsp and 1 black lab.
But my stab at the question is bring lots of water my last German short hair was a freaking sponge when out hiking in the summer or hunting. 2nd was forcing her to stop and cool down. That dog would kill herself if I didn't, and learn when its time to call it a day especially as they get older. Again my gsp had such a drive she would kill herself if I let her.

Yes, the core issue's knowing when to protect the dog from its own drive. I'm trying to figure out if a golden's heavy coat makes that significantly harder than with a GSP.

Golden Retrievers do great in Utah's open areas, but heat is a thing. I like to hunt early and water is a must. I also keep my dog's fur trimmed a bit shorter. They are born to work, it's important to know when they become tired. If you pay attention to those things, they are amazing.
