After testing rifles in Utah's high country, I think I prefer the 300 Win Mag. Its stopping power is great and it shoots accurately past 400 yards. I also used a lighter 6.5 PRC, which is good for less recoil and still reaches far. So, for Utah elk, I'd take the 300 Win Mag for power or the 6.5 PRC for long shots, am I making some sense?

My back is still killing me from carrying that 300 Win Mag. Guess I need to build bigger muscles for those long shots :)

I think the 300 win would make more sense for long range shots on elk.
Especially if using 200 grain bullets.
The 6.5 prc would be compared to the 270 Winchester, ok for elk inside 400 yrds. I sold my vanguard 300 win beacuse of weight 9lb vs kimber 7 lb weight. It may not seem alot if only hiking 1/2 mile from the truck but going 4or5 miles every day it sure wore on me as I got above 50.
