What shotgun works best for home defense?

I’m in the market for a shotgun specifically for home defense and could use some pointers. I’m debating between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I get that the 12-gauge packs a punch, but I’ve heard that a 20-gauge is easier to manage, especially in tight spaces. What have you all found works best?

I’m also curious about the ideal barrel length and whether a shorter stock setup is better for maneuverability. Any particular models or brands you've had success with? I’m aiming for something straightforward and dependable.

Lastly, I know training is crucial. I’ve shot shotguns before, but I want to be prepared. What kind of practice do you suggest to get comfortable and confident for home defense?

Everyone has their preference. I like vintage arms for their simplicity, proven reliability, versatility and their character. Home defense generally calls for a shorter barrel or “riot gun” length (18”-20”) for maneuverability. A shoulder stocked gun is generally recommended for control and accuracy. Training will help overcome the effect of the stock length.

I can think of three, all in 12 , (most available ammo in any situation) I particularly like:

1. TNN modern clone of Colt 1887 exposed hammer double coach. (Takes modern shells)

2- Winchester Model 1897 pump. (Watch out for the “knuckle buster” bolt.)

3 - Ithaca model 1937, bottom ejecting pump action. Light, smooth, effective.

The double harkens back to cowboy and stage coach days, and will shoot about any projectile, including a handful of gravel.

Versions of the two pump models were issued by the military in “trench gun” form for use in WWI, WWII and Vietnam.

I’m sure tactical guys will have some more ideas….

With the 590S you can use the short rounds and pack a few more in there.

I don't have a lot of self defense experience however for me 12 gauge
With 00 buckshot would end up being to much penatration in the house.
I remember reading a test done by the fbi which would be the most effective man stopper for shotgun. They're conclusion was 20 gauge with #3 buckshot inside 20 feet was more lethal than 12 gauge with 00 buck, at further range the 12 became more lethal. Don't remember all the details but that was basically the conclusion. If your wanting to stick with the 12 gauge I'd consider going down in shot size . I love my 20 gauge which ever you decide I'd probably get the shortest barrel 18 or 20" kinda hard to maneuver with a 30" goose gun around corners 😆
I would look at the mossberg 500 or Remington on the low cost side at a pawn shop or ut gun exchange. Just my preference.

I chose a 12 gauge for ammo availability and stopping power. An 18 inch barrel made tight rooms manageable without flinging the lamp. I run 00 buck for home defense and keep a slug for worst case.
