I’m a young man looking to start hunting/trapping for the first time in my life. I don’t have anyone to go too to ask for advice so I was wondering if anyone had some knowledge they’d be willing to spare to get started in hunting/trapping

What type of hunting? Big game?

I stick to varmint hunting myself but there are a couple guys on here that may be able to assist with bird or big game hunts.

In my opinion starting out hunting with a flintlock is a huge undertaking. Not to discourage you from it ,however my advice to you from my own learning to hunt by myself was hard enough with out the add difficulties of the flintlock.
I would suggest to try out hunting with a antlerless rifle elk tag just to build your confidence and to get your feet wet. If you want to hunt with a flintlock I would start out with hunting small game with a 20 gage fouling gun. Rabbits and birds like grouse and pheasant.
As far as flintlocks go I would not buy cheap. Buy from a quality builder or on the lower end from Pedersolli or a Lyman. Look at where the flash hole is positioned in the pan. You do not want the flash hole in the bottom of the pan it should be centered of the top of the pan or slightly above. Second do not use blackpowder substitutes only real black powder which is hard to come by with out paying hazmat fee and shipping cost.
There's alot of good information about flintlocks on YouTube .
I don't know your age but moose in Utah
Is a once in a lifetime hunt. You need to start applying for points . For elk its around 20 points to draw a limited elk tag. So if your 20 by the time your 40 you might draw out. Don't let that discourage you There's still plenty of good hunting opportunities available just don't expect to harvest record book trophies.
If your interested I do have a 58 caliber Chambers flintlock rifle I built that I'd sell.
If you have any more questions you can pm me. Im not a expert on flintlocks but I have built a few. Just remember like most things in life its better to buy quality tools then cheap tools. The old saying buy once cry once. Good luck.
